Why you'd want to live in Summerville

Summerville SC is the largest city in Dorchester County in southeastern South Carolina on I-26 just 24 miles north of Charleston. Known as "The Flower Town in the Pines," Summerville has a profusion of public and private gardens, including the 12 acre Azalea Park and is especially beautiful in the spring and the town holds their flower festival. The town's name is representative of its history. Situated on a pine-forested ridge, it was first inhabited in the late 1700's as Charlestonians and other inhabitants of the Lowcountry sought relief from the summer heat, mosquitoes and disease. From May to September plantation families along the nearby Ashley River and other coastal areas, headed for higher elevation to live temporarily or "maroon," in the tiny forest colony soon dubbed Summerville. There are over 700 homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, Summerville is well-known for its historic character. Today, Summerville is one of the fastest growing communities in the Southeast with over 50,000 residents claiming the area as home, and while Charleston is close there is ample shopping in the downtown Summerville and surrounding areas. Homes in the area are much less expensive than closer to the city of Charleston. From the established and growing community of Cane Bay Plantation, to the affordable golf course communities of Wescott Plantation and Legends Oak. or even the quiet and pet friendly master planned community of Ashborough will find that Summerville has a great deal to offer home buyers and it is easy to see why families are making their way to this southern subtropical paradise.
